Students Predict the Grammys

Neha Srivastava '16 and Sanaea Bhagwagar '17, Entertainment Editors
A celebration of the year’s best music and artists, the 58th Annual Grammys awards show aired on Monday, February 15 on CBS. Prior to its broadcast, we asked Hopkins students to predict which songs and artists they believed would win each category.
Tatiana Niebuhr ’17 offered her opinion on 2015 as a whole: “Many different records with many different styles found success this year. It looks like the bubblegum dance pop domination from 2011 is dissolving into a more laid-back sound, with alternative, acoustic, and r&b tracks becoming more prominent in the ‘pop’ sphere.”

Artists Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and Wiz Khalifa all appeared as common favorites amongst students. Tyler Bahamonde ’18 commented, “Kendrick Lamar is the best. He is a lyrical genius.” Lauren Antonelli ’16 was confident in her predictions: “Regardless of your personal feelings on [Taylor Swift]  and her “squad,” there is no denying she will win every category she is nominated for.”

Niebuhr added, “It seemed as if each month of 2015, another track from 1989 rose to the top of the charts and saw hours and hours of radio air time. Swift’s 1989 saw such consistent popularity that it would be difficult for it to not win any awards at the 2016 Grammys.”
