    • Captain Libby Gardner ’18 hits the slopes with older brother Colby Gardner.

Libby Gardner: Super Skier

Hopkins Ski Team captain Libby Gardner ’18 has dedicated her time to the team since its founding.
Due to her exposure to skiing from her family, Gardner began the sport at only three years old. She excels as both a leader and a racer, and brings the team together. Gardner “makes everyone laugh and have a good time, while working hard,” according to Erin Kelleher ’21.

As an experienced racer, Gardner received an All State honorable mention. Katherine Takoudes ’20, said, “Because she has been racing in Vermont from a very young age, Libby has always been a very strong racer. This is now her third year on the team, and her second year as a captain and all her practice racing at Mount Southington has really made her stand out amongst the other racers in our league.”

Gardner makes a strong impact on her team members, and although the role of a captain can be stressful, she also fnds it is rewarding. Katherine Takoudes ’20 described Gardner’s positive infuence on the team. “Besides being an incredible racer, Libby is always willing to coach the rest of the team on our form or give us tips on how to approach a certain gate on the mountain. She has a contagious love of skiing and is very outgoing and welcoming, especially to the new members of our team.”

Grace Rhatigan ’21 stressed Gardner’s natural ability to lead and unify the team. “She is a very fast skier and focused on this sport, but she always makes sure to emphasize that having fun and just enjoying the ride is the most important part.”

Head Coach John Isaacs stated “It was a natural choice for her to be captain as a junior” in regards to her innate ability to lead. “It’s not a role that she really thinks about too much because it just naturally happens. She’s also really good at being one of everybody, and just being part of the group.”

Gardner commented that the team also made an impression on her, “The Hopkins Ski Team is like no other team I have been on. Everyone is extremely supportive and caring, especially our coaches.” In her fnal season, Gardner intends to fnish off well. “The season is almost over so I hope that we can go out strong and get some good placements in the last races.”
